Islamabad & Rawalpindi – Road Closures Islamabad & Rawalpindi – Road Closures

If you’re commuting in Islamabad or Rawalpindi these days, there are a few things you should know. The traffic police have rolled out a new traffic plan, thanks to ongoing road works and a string of public and political events. So, yes — travel smart, leave early, and keep an eye on official police updates to avoid getting stuck in a mess.

What’s Going on in Islamabad

  • Murree Road (Faizabad to Committee Chowk): Partly shut down for resurfacing work. Some lanes are open, but traffic is crawling in spots.
  • Kashmir Highway (towards G‑9 flyover): One or two lanes are under restriction while signals are being upgraded.
  • Red Zone gate access: Only authorized vehicles are allowed due to VIP movements and tighter security.
  • Faisal Avenue underpass: Temporarily unusable — instead, use Jinnah Avenue or the local roads in F‑8.
  • If you’re heading to the Red Zone, Blue Area or Faizabad, try using Margalla Road or IJP Road — they’re your best bet right now.

What’s Happening in Rawalpindi

  • Murree Road (Shamsabad to Saddar): Heaving with traffic, especially because of metro bus lane restrictions.
  • 6th Road / Satellite Town: Minor reroutes in place; many vehicles are being directed toward Iqbal Road.
  • Committee Chowk underpass: Shut for maintenance. The word is, it might reopen sometime next week.
  • If you can, steer clear of central Rawalpindi during rush hours. Use Airport Road, Adiala Road, or Peshawar Road instead.

A Few Words from the Police

Here’s what the authorities want you to do to make life easier for everyone:

Schools & Colleges to Remain ClosedSchools & Colleges to Remain Closed on Monday, October 13 – Official Notice Issued
  • Obey those diversion signs and cones — the people on the ground know what’s up.
  • Use the Ride Pakistan app or call 1915 (ICT Traffic Police) for live traffic updates.
  • Avoid entering Red Zone areas when VIP convoys are expected.
  • If you travel by public transport, check the metro schedule beforehand.
  • Over 40 intersections in both cities now have extra traffic officers deployed to keep things moving.

Special Measures for Schools & Offices

To ease the morning rush, extra squads are focusing around schools and educational hubs in G‑10, H‑8, Saddar, etc. Parents are requested not to double-park near main roads — use the designated zones instead.

When Can We Expect Relief?

Authorities say the Murree Road work and Committee Chowk maintenance should wrap up by mid‑October 2025. After that, things should start returning to normal. They’re also testing new signals and smart traffic management tools, especially for the Islamabad–Rawalpindi corridor.
